How to use bondage tape – A guide for couples

The image that comes to mind when people think of bondage is leather, clamps, metal and red room safe words. It’s so much more than that, though, despite heavy handcuffs doing the job.

Using bondage tape is something that should be far more popular on the kink radar than it currently is, as it’s a wonderful way to enjoy safe restraint. There are options for beginners as much as there are options for seasoned users and it is a great tool for those who want to ease into the BDSM scene.

What is Bondage Tape?

The curiosity must have got the better of you if you’re here and learning about using bondage tape and the very first thing that you should know is that it’s not the same as duct tape.

You may have this already at home, or electrical tape in the garage, but it’s not the same. Bondage tape is a thin layer of PVC with no glue – it sticks to itself. There is no risk of glue residue being left behind, no skin will be sore and there’s no risk of pulling any hair out by the time you’re done with the tape, either! Bondage tape is reusable and it’s a cheap way to have a little restraint fun.

How To Have Fun With Bondage Tape!

There are so many ways to enjoy bondage tape, and I’ve put them together for you below:

For restraint:

Restraint can be done at the wrists and ankles, and it’s a fun way to enjoy light BDSM at home. There are always fluffy handcuffs but bondage tape means no pinching or rubbing, which can happen with the handcuffs. You restrain wrists with the inner wrists touching each other for extra comfort and protection, and you may need more than one layer to be able to keep your partner in place.

The same is said for ankle bondage, but make sure that the ankles cross each other before you bind them so that the ankle bones don’t rub together.

Bondage tape can also be used for restraint to chairs, bed rails and other standing objects. As there is no glue, there’s no risk to stains or sticky patches on the objects to which you restrain.

Using bondage tape as a couple

Bondage tape can certainly be used alone, but many would argue that it’s more fun when used by a couple. Taking turns tying each other up can be an incredibly fun activity, and it’s even better when using soft tape instead of tough metal chains or inflexible leather.

We’re sure that once you bring the tape into the bedroom, you’ll find plenty of ways to use it. But we’ve put together a list of some of the best positions and activities to maximise bondage tape fun as a couple.

Wrist restraining play

Start off by getting used to the tape and playing around with its texture and stretchiness on your partner’s arms. You can use the tape to build up tension by lightly slapping the tape against their arms.

Once they’ve got used to the feeling and they’re looking for more, you can figure out how you want to bind their wrists. Above their head, behind their back or in front of them are all good options – it comes down to your mood!

Depending on how much you want them to struggle, you could tightly wrap one wrist individually and then the other before bringing them together to tie as a pair.

Remember to use more than you think is necessary if you want to be doubly sure they can’t escape.

Blindfolding and gagging

The great thing about bondage tape is how you can place it safely over your eyes without any fear of injury (just don’t pull it too tightly and communicate throughout). Its soft and sleek feel will give the wearer a great sensation and allow them to relax while their partner gets up to more fun.

If you’ve ever experimented at all in the world of bondage, you’ll know that finding a comfortable and effective gag can be quite difficult. It can be tough to find a safe device that the user finds pleasurable to wear and doesn’t need to be periodically removed to avoid mouth or jaw strain.

Bondage tape is perfect for gagging, giving the recipient an enjoyable and wearable piece of material over their mouth, and giving your partner full control over the experience.

Clothing

Unexpectedly, one of the most exciting uses of bondage tape can be fashionable! Apart from your imagination, there is no limit to what you and your partner can do with bondage tape.

The advantage of making bondage tape clothes is that you can make form-fitting clothes that flatter and highlight your partner’s body. From skimpy bondage bikinis, figure-hugging skirts, bodycon dresses to skin-tight leggings paired with heels – bondage tape can do it all.

Another great benefit is the fact that you can unwrap your ‘clothes’ and remake them again and again – you may even be tempted to wear some of your creations on a night out.

Endless possibilities

Remember the golden rules of playing safe when it comes to bondage – communication is key, consent is ongoing, and that when it comes to testing each other’s limits, trust is the most important element of a fun play session.

Handy Hints

  • The one thing to remember about bondage tape is that it’s reusable. You can wash off any sweat or residue with plain water, dry it on a towel and then just re-roll it up for next time.
  • There are some variations of bondage tape that will have more stretch to them than others so it’s completely up to you which you use depending on the type of role play you’re looking for. The stretchier options will always bounce back!
  • You should always keep safety scissors nearby – just in case your partner needs a quick escape, and remember that it can get hot for the person being bound.
  • Comfort is key, so remember a safe word and don’t tighten the tape to the point of circulation being cut off!
  • Aftercare is also important – and the future sessions you may have depend on it.
