The best bondage toys & BDSM restraints for beginners

Where do you start when it comes to bondage for beginners?

Well, that must be why you’re here! But it’s a very valid question. Whilst some people may think of sultry sex dungeons and Fifty Shades of Grey and the mere utterance of BDSM, others may relate bondage to vacuum beds and suspect cages… essentially, not something that looks enticing for those new to it.

The fantastic thing about BDSM is that there’s such a vast array of toys and equipment out there that you’re practically spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the right equipment as you’re starting out. Whether that’s a complete beginners set or a number of toys you put together to create your own bondage collection, there really is no limit.

From sex swings and spreader bars to cuffs and masks, take a look at my favourite toys and restraints for anyone new to the fabulous world of bondage, discipline, dominance and submission.

Lovehoney All You Need Bondage Kit (20 Piece)

This 5 piece set is ideal for either entering the world of BDSM or for taking it to a whole new level. Included in the set are: a 52 frond faux leather flogger with a 6 inch handle to help you wield it with ease, padded and easily adjustable cuffs and a collar, a comfortable blindfold and breathable gag, and a 39 inch lead with an easily connectable and detachable clip to be connected as you see fit. The faux leather is comfortable from the get go, unlike real leather which requires time and usage before it gets supple.

This bondage kit is essentially a pretty comprehensive beginner kit for the aspirant BDSM enthusiast. It comes with a blindfold, cuffs for both wrists and ankles, and sensory toys including nipple suckers, a beginners flogger, a vibrating cock rock, and a finger vibe.

The adjustable velcro straps are both safe and comfortable for beginners, and make an easy option for those looking for a slightly less intense kit. The under mattress strapping allows for easy restraint on most beds, or the cuffs can be used solo!

If you’re looking for a little inspiration in the bedroom, whether new to bondage or a seasoned pro, this little card game offers a lovely way to spice things up! Take turns to draw cards and act out what’s on them, the 52 cards apt to provide hours and hours of fun.

It comes with a pair of satin ties and a satin blindfold, making it easy to travel with if you don’t fancy lugging around your full bondage kit wherever you go! It’s sure to give you ideas if you’re in a rut or just fancy something a little different – a fun and creative way to get intimate with your partner!

This 7 piece bondage set is great for those who appreciate a little bit of style. The 4 satin restraints are both comfortable and reliable, and can of course be easily adjustable. The feather tickler is proof that BDSM can be subtle, and for the more sensitive among us, will offer absolutely titillating arousal.

The faux suede and leather flogger is incredible, and offers slightly more intense play options than the feather tickler! No matter your mood, this kit will provide something to get playing with.

This set really explains itself in its name – it is literally all you could need from a bondage kit, and then some. Whether you’re just getting into it and want to make sure you get everything in one convenient package, or want to do a complete overhaul of your sex toy collection, from blindfold to rubber flogger whip, this really has it all.

The stainless steel pinwheel is just waiting for creative use, and it even has a set of jiggle balls for kegel strengthening! If you can think of a sex toy, chances are it’s included, and while it may seem pricey, when you break it down, it’s actually really good value.

This bondage and strap-on kit is perfect for those who have dipped their feet into the world of BDSM and are looking to take things to the next level. With flogger, dildo, and restraints, you’re all set to go, and the adjustable harness has three different O-rings for strap-on exploration.

All of the gear is compatible with water based lube, which is just about the only thing it doesn’t come with! If you’re looking to step things up, give this kit a go for sure.

This comfortable and easy to use set of bondage gear is ideal for those who want to get started with BDSM exploration, but don’t want to commit a lot of money to the experience. The ankle and wrist cuffs are faux fur lined, with velcro fastenings offering super easy and safe restraint.

The eye mask is also fur lined, making for a complete soft and luscious experience. The eye-catching metallic green and steel colour scheme marks a break from the common reds, pinks, and blacks associated with bondage, a brightness that may suit some very well!

This offering by Sportsheets is another excellent beginners package, perhaps even more complete than the one above! Each of the 4 ankle and wrist restraints is attached to a 44 inch strap, which can be tied to bed posts or whatever you have to hand for easy and adjustable restraint play. It offers a lot of flexibility, and encourages truly free exploration, with the lovely and highly comfortable eye mask providing an option for sensory deprivation as well!

This handmade sex machine vibrator is another great midrange option. It offers angle adjustability from 0 to 85 degrees, with 6cm of reciprocating movement.

The speed is adjustable, and the relatively small size when folded up makes it a good choice for the space conscious. The dildo attachment is 17cm by 3.2cm, a good intermediate size, quite appropriate for beginners and experts alike!

This wonderful 10 piece is a great way to tie up this set of reviews. With a set of 40 different instruction sex cards, it makes a great way to explore new games and positions, a wonderful fun and creative way to spice up your sex life a little. It also provides an instruction sheet on tips and safety information, helping things run smoothly and without undue risk.

The set of dice offer randomised control, creating a little ambiguity which makes things so much more exciting! The satin and PVC bondage tape and ties are soft and easy to use, and the whole package fits into a beautiful red bag for easy storage. This would make a wonderful gift, either for yourself or your special partner!

How to use

BDSM offers potentially endless creative and stimulating fun, but it’s important that restraints are used in a safe manner, or it can be potentially quite dangerous. Make sure you read up thoroughly on what knots to use, and what kinds of restraint to be extra careful with or avoid completely, such as perhaps neck restraint.

Be sure to have a predetermined safe word which you’re both familiar with, so that you can ensure it remains fun and consensual at all times, allowing you both to have as much fun as you possibly can.

Prices

As with all sex toys, bondage gear can get pretty niche and expensive, but this set of reviews offers a lot of variety in terms of budget focus. If you’re just getting started, and don’t feel ready to invest a lot of money, perhaps look at a set of simple restraints, such as options 8 and 9.

If you’re looking for a more complete package and don’t mind spending a bit more, option 5 offers pretty much everything you could need. You can of course build up your collection as and when you desire, meaning you don’t have to jump in at the deep end, but can ease your way in!

Cleaning

Of course, it’s important to keep all sex toys clean and sanitary, and bondage gear is no different. Lots of restraints will likely be machine washable, but check first with the manufacturer information provided, so that you don’t shrink or damage anything by accident.

Non-insertable sex toys are of course less important to keep clean, as there’s less chance of getting an infection, but it’s important nonetheless to keep exterior toys clean and smelling fresh, no-one wants a dirty cuff put on them!

Storage

The easiest way to keep something clean is to not get it dirty, so outside of usage, it’s important to store your bondage gear in a clean environment. Some of the options here come with handy storage bags, and you may want to buy a chest of some sort to store your collection in as it grows. If you’re travelling a lot, maybe look into getting some neat and surreptitious storage bags, unless you don’t mind it all spilling out at the airport!

Recommended For

While BDSM has a bit of a reputation for being quite niche, it doesn’t have to be extreme at all, and can offer heaps of fun for anyone who’s willing to get a bit creative! The gear listed in this review can offer tons of fun to anyone with a bit of a creative flair who’s up for trying something new, from the BDSM masters to those just dipping their toes in the water. If you’re on the fence, don’t be afraid, give it a go, and I highly doubt that you’ll regret opening the door to a whole new world.
